Saved by grace! Grace is a gift, free from the ability to compensate in any way for it or repay the giver. It is unmerited favor, in that we did not deserve God's love and mercy, yet while we were yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly. Mixing this with works, as modern religion sometimes does, would pollute the gospel message of good news! That would only frustrate the grace of God.
